How to use: Enter the road distance and pick the cargo type — we work out the validity in days.

How it's counted
600 km ÷ 200 km = 3 days of validity. Each day runs until midnight of the day following the e-way bill's generation date and time.
Per Rule 138 of the CGST Rules. ODC = over-dimensional cargo, or a multimodal shipment that includes movement by vessel.
Under Rule 138 of the CGST Rules, an e-way bill's validity is set by the distance the goods travel: 1 day per 200 km for regular cargo, and 1 day per 20 km for over-dimensional cargo — rounded up, with a minimum of one day.
Use it to check whether a single e-way bill covers your full route, or whether a long-haul consignment will need its validity extended en route.
Validity is computed per CGST Rules, 2017 (Rule 138): one day per 200 km (or part) for regular cargo and one day per 20 km for over-dimensional cargo, from the e-way bill's generation time.
- Over-dimensional cargo uses different distance slabs; extensions have their own rules.
- How is e-way bill validity calculated?
- For regular cargo, the e-way bill is valid for 1 day for every 200 km (or part thereof). For over-dimensional cargo (ODC) or multimodal movement including a vessel, it's 1 day for every 20 km. The minimum is always 1 day.
- When does a 'day' start and end?
- Each day is counted from the e-way bill's generation date and time, and ends at midnight of the day immediately following. So a bill generated at 2 PM on the 1st with 1-day validity expires at midnight ending the 2nd.
- What counts as over-dimensional cargo (ODC)?
- Cargo whose dimensions exceed the limits set under the Motor Vehicles rules, or multimodal shipments that include movement by ship. ODC gets the slower 1-day-per-20-km validity.
- Can e-way bill validity be extended?
- Yes — under exceptional circumstances (e.g. transhipment delay or a breakdown) the transporter can extend validity, generally within 8 hours before or after expiry. This tool shows the base validity by distance.
