Read the numbers the right way

Overall subscription mixes institutions, big investors and small investors, so a huge overall figure can sit beside a modest retail one. For a small investor the retail figure is the useful one: when it is above 1x, allotment is a lottery, and your chance of one lot is roughly one divided by the retail subscription.

Questions

What does IPO subscription status mean?
It shows how many times the shares on offer have been applied for so far. 1x means bids equal the shares available; 20x means bids for twenty times as many. It is reported overall and separately for each investor category, and it updates through each bidding day until the issue closes at 5 PM on the last day.
Which subscription figure matters for a small investor?
The retail (RII) figure. Retail investors bid up to ₹2 lakh, and when the retail portion is oversubscribed, allotment is by lottery: roughly, at 20x retail subscription one application has about a 1 in 20 chance of getting a lot. The overall figure is pulled up by institutions and big investors and says little about your odds.
When is the final subscription figure known?
After bidding closes at 5 PM on the last day. Exchanges keep updating the numbers through each day, and the closing figure is usually settled in the evening. Day-one numbers are often small because institutions and many retail investors bid on the last day.
Does high subscription mean a listing gain?
Not necessarily. Heavy subscription shows demand, but listing price also depends on the price band, market mood on listing day and how many allotted investors sell at once. Treat it as one signal, not a promise.
