Interest is 1% a month on the shortfall rounded down to ₹100: three months for June, September and December, one month for March. Paying at least 12% by June and 36% by September avoids 234C on those two dates. A future date with nothing entered shows what it would cost if you skipped it.

Advance tax is the same income tax, paid across the year instead of at the end. If your tax after TDS is ₹10,000 or more, the law expects a set share of it by four dates, and charges interest when you fall behind: section 234C for each late or short instalment, and section 234B if less than 90% has been paid by 31 March.

Enter your tax for the year after TDS and what you've paid by each date. The calculator shows how much is due by the next date and the interest on anything missed, instalment by instalment, using the government's own rounding.

Don't know your tax yet? Work it out with the income tax calculator; for gains on shares or funds, the capital gains tax calculator. The background is in the 15 December instalment people miss.

Income-tax Act, 1961: sections 207 and 208 (who pays; the ₹10,000 threshold), 211 (due dates and percentages, including 44AD/44ADA), 234B and 234C (interest), and Rule 119A of the Income-tax Rules (rounding down to ₹100; a part month counts as a full month).

Tax paid by 15 March is treated as paid by 31 March. Capital gains, lottery or dividend income arising after a due date (which carries no 234C on the earlier dates) is not separated out. The tax figure is yours to supply; surcharge, MAT/AMT and the interest under section 234A for filing late are not included.

What are the advance tax due dates for FY 2026-27?
15 June 2026 (15% of the year's tax), 15 September 2026 (45% in total), 15 December 2026 (75% in total) and 15 March 2027 (100%). The percentages are cumulative. If you are taxed presumptively under section 44AD or 44ADA, the whole amount is due in one payment by 15 March 2027.
Who has to pay advance tax?
Anyone whose tax for the year, after TDS and TCS, is ₹10,000 or more. That includes salaried people with interest, rent, capital gains or freelance income their employer's TDS doesn't cover. A resident senior citizen (60+) with no business or professional income is exempt.
How is interest under section 234C calculated?
1% a month on the shortfall against each due date, for three months on the June, September and December instalments and one month on the March one. The shortfall is rounded down to a multiple of ₹100 first. There is no 234C interest on the June or September instalment if you paid at least 12% or 36% of the tax by then.
When does section 234B interest apply?
When the advance tax paid by 31 March is less than 90% of the tax for the year. It is 1% a month, or part of a month, on the unpaid tax from 1 April until you pay it, usually when you file the return. Paying the balance with a return filed in July means four months.
I missed the June and September instalments. What should I do now?
Pay before 15 December. The interest on the missed instalments is fixed at three months each whatever you do, but paying 75% of the year's tax by 15 December stops the December shortfall, and reaching 90% by 31 March avoids 234B. Pay on the income tax e-filing portal through e-Pay Tax, under 'Advance Tax (100)' for assessment year 2027-28.
What if my capital gain came after an instalment date?
No 234C interest applies on the tax on capital gains, lottery winnings or dividends that arose after a due date, as long as that tax is paid in the remaining instalments of the year. This calculator doesn't separate those out, so for an autumn capital gain, treat the earlier shortfalls as zero.
