Most "cost of living in Bangalore" answers are one number for one person. A family of four is a different question: two school fees, a bigger house, and someone to help at home. Published estimates for 2026 put a family of four between ₹1.05 lakh and ₹1.75 lakh a month, which is so wide it tells you nothing on its own.
The spread comes almost entirely from two lines — where you rent and which school you pick. Price those two honestly and the rest of the budget barely moves.
Rent: the same 2BHK, three different prices
- Across the city a 2BHK runs roughly ₹18,000 to ₹55,000 a month.
- In Whitefield, a family 2BHK is about ₹30,000 to ₹45,000.
- Indiranagar, Koramangala and Jayanagar sit at the same premium end, ₹40,000 and up.
- Move out to the older suburbs and the same flat is closer to the ₹18,000 end — but count the commute in hours before you count the saving.
- Add a deposit of 6 to 10 months' rent, which is Bangalore's real barrier to moving.
School: the line that decides everything
- Monthly fees run from about ₹3,000 to ₹20,000 per child, depending on whether it's a state-board, CBSE or international school.
- International schools are a different scale: ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh a year per child, and up.
- Two children in a mid-range CBSE school cost about as much as the rent.
- Admission and one-time development fees land in the first year and are rarely in anyone's monthly maths.
- Transport, books, uniforms and activities add roughly a month's fee again across the year.

One month, priced line by line
Take a family of four in Whitefield: a 2BHK at ₹35,000, two children in a mid-range CBSE school at ₹8,000 each, groceries and household at ₹18,000, a full-time house help at ₹6,000, fuel and cabs at ₹8,000, electricity, water, gas and internet at ₹4,500, family health insurance at ₹2,500 a month, and ₹6,000 for eating out, clothes and everything else. That is ₹96,000 a month before a single rupee is saved. Adding a 20% saving rate takes the requirement to about ₹1.2 lakh in hand, which in FY 2026-27 means a CTC in the ₹18-20 lakh range for a single earner.
What moves the number most
- School choice: swapping one international seat for a CBSE seat can change the year by ₹3 lakh or more.
- Locality: the same flat 12 km further out is often ₹15,000 a month cheaper.
- One car or none: fuel, insurance, servicing and parking are quietly ₹10,000-12,000 a month once you own one.
- Two earners: the second income does not double the cost of living, so the saving rate jumps.
- Rent rises: most Bangalore agreements carry a yearly increase, so budget for next year, not this one.
Run your own CTC through the in-hand salary calculator before you sign a lease — the gap between CTC and what actually reaches the bank is where most Bangalore budgets break.
