Taken from your biggest flexible lines first. Puja items are left alone; crackers and the gold beyond a token can wait in full.

  • Gold / silver on Dhanteras (धनतेरस)−₹10,600

₹15,000 → ₹4,400 · keep a token coin for Dhanteras; buy the rest in a later month

These cuts bring the plan inside the budget.

Diwali spending rarely feels big line by line — a box of mithai here, a gift there, new clothes for the kids, a gold coin on Dhanteras, the ticket home. It is the total that surprises people, usually in December when the credit-card bill arrives.

This planner puts every line on one page: gifts as people × amount, then sweets and dry fruits, clothes, cleaning and lights, puja items, Dhanteras gold or silver, travel, crackers if your city allows them, and anything else. It sets the total against a fixed budget, or against your bonus plus a share of one month's salary, and shows how many months of your usual saving the festival takes. If the plan is over, the cut list works out which of your own lines can absorb the gap.

Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November 2026 and Diwali on Sunday 8 November. For what the festival really costs a household, read the real cost of Diwali; for what is left of the bonus after tax, Diwali bonus par tax; for the gift rules, tax on Diwali gifts; and before buying silver, Dhanteras par chandi kharidein? To see whether a bigger purchase fits your finances, use Can I Afford It?

The arithmetic is yours: every line is the amount you enter, gifts are people × average per gift, and crackers count only if you mark them allowed where you live. Months of saving = planned total ÷ your usual monthly saving. The cut list caps each trim at a fixed share of that line (crackers and gold 100%, decor, clothes and other 50%, gifts 40%, travel and sweets 30%, puja 0%) and takes the biggest room first. Festival dates: Dhanteras 6 November and Diwali 8 November 2026.

  • Prices on the day — gold rate, ticket fares — can move after you plan.
  • The cut list is arithmetic on your lines, not a judgement of what matters to your family.
How much should I budget for Diwali?
There is no right number for every family — it depends on how many people you give gifts to, whether you travel home, and whether gold is part of your Dhanteras. A workable rule is to fund Diwali from the bonus and money set aside for it, not from next month's bills or a credit card. Put your own lines into the planner and it shows how the total compares with what you can spend, and how many months of your usual saving it takes.
How do I plan a Diwali gift budget?
Count the people first, then set one average amount per gift — family, friends, the building staff and office together. The planner multiplies the two, so you can see straight away whether trimming the list or trimming the amount matters more. Gifts from relatives are tax-free for the receiver; from others, once they add up to more than ₹50,000 in a year, the whole amount becomes taxable.
Is it a good idea to buy gold on Dhanteras?
Buying on Dhanteras is a tradition, not a better price — gold costs the same the following week, and jewellery carries a making charge and GST that a coin or digital gold mostly avoids. If the budget is tight, a small coin keeps the custom and the rest can be bought in a month when it does not compete with gifts and travel. The cut list treats gold above a token as something that can wait.
What does the cut list do?
When your plan is over budget, it closes the gap from your own figures, starting with the lines that have the most room: crackers and gold can wait entirely, decor, clothes and miscellaneous can be halved, gifts trimmed by up to 40%, travel and sweets by 30%. Puja items are never touched. If even that does not close the gap, it says how much is still left over.
