You might think you only 'pay tax' once a year at ITR time. But you pay a tax on almost every purchase, every single day — GST, quietly included in the price.
GST is inside the price, not on top
Unlike a visible fee, GST is usually baked into the price. A restaurant bill, a phone recharge, an online order — the tax is already inside the number you pay, which is exactly why most people never notice it.
The slabs: 0, 5, 18 and 40%
GST in India runs at a handful of rates, and they changed on 22 September 2025. The old 12% and 28% bands were scrapped: most 12% items dropped to 5%, most 28% items dropped to 18%, and a 40% band was created for a short list of luxury and sin goods. So essentials sit at 0-5%, the bulk of goods and services at 18%, and very little at 40%. A ₹1,180 online order at 18% contains ₹180 of GST — the actual product was ₹1,000.
It adds up more than you think
Between food delivery, subscriptions, phone bills, eating out and shopping, GST on everyday spending can quietly run into tens of thousands of rupees a year for an average urban household. You never write a cheque for it, but you pay it all the same.
See the split on any price
Reverse-GST math pulls the tax back out of any final price, so you can see what you're paying for the product versus the tax. Handy for business invoices — and just for being a sharper spender.

Frequently asked questions
- Is GST included in the MRP?
- For most retail goods the MRP is inclusive of GST, so the tax is already inside the price you pay. On many services and restaurant bills it's added and shown separately. Either way, you pay it on almost everything.
- What are the GST slabs in India?
- Since the GST 2.0 reform of 22 September 2025 the main rates are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%. The 12% and 28% slabs were abolished — most 12% items moved down to 5% and most 28% items down to 18%, with 40% reserved for a short luxury and sin list. A ₹1,180 purchase at 18% contains ₹180 of GST on a ₹1,000 base.
