Against the average worker
The average salaried employee in India earned ₹21,103 a month (Apr–Jun 2024). You earn about 2.4× that.
The self-employed averaged ₹13,900 in 30 days, and casual workers ₹433 a day. Source: PLFS Annual Report 2023-24 (MoSPI).
Only 3.80 crore of 7.55 crore individual returns reported any salary, and most Indian workers don't file a return at all, so this rank is among filers, not all earners.
Mera Rank answers one question with official numbers: of the Indians who file an income-tax return, how many earn less than you? It uses CBDT's published count of returns in each income band and places your yearly income inside its band.
Choose Salary to compare your gross salary with filers who reported a salary, or Total income to compare all your income with every individual filer. Beside the rank, the average earnings from the government's labour survey show where you stand against the typical worker, most of whom never file a return.

CBDT, Income Tax Return Statistics, Assessment Year 2023-24 (June 2024), Table 2.1 (individuals by range of gross total income, 7,54,61,286 returns) and Table 2.2 (individuals by range of salary income). PLFS Annual Report 2023-24 (MoSPI/NSO), Tables 38–40, average earnings, April–June 2024. Inside a band, returns are assumed to be spread evenly.
A rank among return filers, not among all earners; counts are returns, and AY 2023-24 reflects FY 2022-23 incomes. Placement inside a band is an even-spread estimate. Monthly income is taken as one-twelfth of the year.
- What salary puts you in the top 1% in India?
- Among individual income-tax return filers for AY 2023-24 (income of FY 2022-23), about 1.2% of those reporting a salary had more than ₹50 lakh a year in salary. Spreading the ₹50 lakh–₹1 crore band evenly puts the top-1% line near ₹60 lakh. CBDT publishes counts by income band, not exact percentiles, so the tool places your income inside its band. - Is this a rank among all Indians?
- No. No official table gives the earnings of every Indian. The Periodic Labour Force Survey publishes average earnings only, and CBDT's tables cover people who filed a return. So the rank here is among return filers, who are a minority of India's workers, and the survey averages are shown beside it for context.
- What is the average salary in India?
- The PLFS Annual Report 2023-24 puts the average earnings of regular wage and salaried employees at ₹21,103 a month in April–June 2024 (all India, rural and urban). Self-employed workers averaged ₹13,900 in 30 days and casual labour ₹433 a day in the same quarter.
- Why AY 2023-24 and not this year?
- It is the latest year for which CBDT has published its Income Tax Return Statistics with income bands (released June 2024). AY 2023-24 covers income earned in FY 2022-23. Salaries have risen since, so today's rank for the same salary would be a little lower.
