How it works

Every Indian family keeps some version of the lena-dena diary: who came to the wedding, what they gave, and what we gave at theirs. When their daughter's wedding comes around, the diary answers “how much did they give us?” — but not “what is that worth now?”

₹1,100 in 2012 bought far more than ₹1,100 does today. This calculator restates any old shagun in today's money using the government's Cost Inflation Index and suggests an amount ending in 1. What this doesn't cover

The index measures general price rises, not changes in a family's income or closeness. Gifts are recorded by calendar year and matched to the financial year starting that year. The register lives in one browser — export it to keep a copy.

Frequently asked

How much shagun should I give back to a family that gave us earlier?: A fair return is at least what they gave, restated in today's money. Prices have risen a lot over a decade, so an old amount returned unchanged is worth less than what you received. Enter their amount and year above to see the figure, rounded to end in 1.
Why does shagun end in 1 — ₹101, ₹501, ₹1,101?: The extra rupee makes the amount 'incomplete' — a wish that the blessing and the relationship keep growing rather than ending at a round number. The calculator rounds its suggestion the same way.
What inflation figure does the calculator use?: The Cost Inflation Index notified by the Income Tax Department (CBDT), with 2001-02 as the base year. It is an official, published measure of how prices have risen, which makes the restated amount easy to explain to family.
