Residency, NRE vs NRO, property TDS

Managing money in India from abroad has its own rulebook. These tools answer the questions an NRI actually faces: are you a Resident, RNOR or Non-Resident for tax this year; should your money sit in an NRE, NRO or FCNR account under FEMA; and how much TDS a buyer must withhold when you sell Indian property. Each result cites the exact rule so you can verify it — educational guidance, not advice, so confirm the specifics with a professional.

Start with your residential status

Almost every NRI tax question depends on whether you are Resident, RNOR or Non-Resident for that financial year, which is decided by days spent in India, not by passport or visa. Work that out first. Then the account question follows: NRE money is repatriable and its interest tax-free in India, while NRO holds income earned in India and is taxed here.

Selling property or moving money

When an NRI sells property in India, the buyer must deduct TDS at a higher rate than for a resident seller, often on the full sale value unless a lower-deduction certificate is obtained. Check the TDS before the sale, not after, and keep records of the purchase cost and improvements, because they decide how much of the gain is actually taxable.
