How to use: Pick your pay level, your cell today, years of service and city class.
ExampleLevel 3, cell 1, X city → in hand today, after 5 years and after 10 years
Cell 1 = basic ₹21,700. A new joiner starts at cell 1; each yearly increment moves you one cell up.
Counted from the cell above: one increment a year. Promotions and MACP are not included.
All X cities get the higher rate. The higher rate applies in 19 notified cities (DoE OMs, 2017): Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, plus Ghaziabad (X-class, Delhi's HRA rate) and 10 Y cities: Patna, Surat, Kochi, Kozhikode, Indore, Nagpur, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Kanpur, Lucknow. Bhopal and Vadodara are not on it.

Today's DA (63%) is held for the +5 and +10 year columns: future DA rises and the 8th Pay Commission are not known yet, so real pay will likely be higher. CGHS, CGEGIS and post-specific allowances are not included.
The pay slip of a central government employee is built from one number: the basic pay in the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. Your pay level comes from your post (a constable or clerk starts lower than an officer), and your cell in that level goes up by one with every yearly increment. DA, HRA and NPS are all percentages of that basic, so once you know your level and cell, the rest follows from the rules.
This calculator works the whole slip out for today, and for the same job 5 and 10 years from now, so you can see what a sarkari job pays over time, not just in the first month. For the salary of a specific post, read the post guides, for example SSC GD, SSC CGL, Railway NTPC or the full government job salary list. Defence officers are paid on a separate Defence pay matrix with MSP, so this calculator doesn't cover them; see the Army Lieutenant salary guide instead.
Choosing between exams? Compare up to three government jobs side by side: SSC GD, Railway Group D, NTPC, CHSL, CGL, teachers, nurses and more.

Waiting for the 8th Pay Commission? Use the 8th Pay Commission calculator to see your basic under the fitment factors being discussed.
- Basic pay: CCS (Revised Pay) Rules, 2016, Schedule Part A (Gazette of India No. 512, 25 July 2016), Level 13 as amended by G.S.R. 592(E), 15 June 2017.
- DA: DoE Office Memorandum No. 1/2(i)/2026-E.II(B), 29 October 2026 (Cabinet approval 28 October 2026, PIB Release ID 2329485), 63% from 1 July 2026 (PIB).
- HRA: Department of Expenditure OM, 7 July 2017 (30% / 20% / 10% of basic once DA crosses 50%).
- Transport allowance: Department of Expenditure OM No. 21/5/2017-E.II(B), 7 July 2017 (doe.gov.in): Level 9 and above ₹7,200 / ₹3,600; Level 3 to 8, and Level 1–2 drawing ₹24,200 or more, ₹3,600 / ₹1,800; other Level 1–2 ₹1,350 / ₹900; each plus DA.
- Income tax: new regime, tax year 2026-27, after the ₹75,000 standard deduction.
The tool covers basic, DA, HRA, transport allowance, the 10% NPS (or UPS) contribution and income tax. It leaves out CGHS and CGEGIS deductions, post-specific allowances (risk, special duty, nursing, uniform), overtime, promotions and MACP. The +5 and +10 year columns hold today's DA and today's pay matrix, so they show the minimum, not a forecast. Check your own pay slip before relying on a figure.
- How is a central government employee's in-hand salary calculated?
- Basic pay from the 7th CPC Pay Matrix, plus DA (63% of basic from 1 July 2026), HRA (30%, 20% or 10% of basic in X, Y or Z cities) and transport allowance with DA on it, gives the gross. Then 10% of basic plus DA goes to NPS and income tax is deducted. What is left is the in-hand.
- How much does the salary rise every year?
- One increment a year moves you one cell up the same level of the Pay Matrix, which is about 3% of basic. DA, HRA and NPS are percentages of basic, so they rise with it. Promotions and MACP upgrades move you to a higher level and are not included here.
- Why does the 10-year figure use today's DA?
- Future DA rises are announced twice a year and the 8th Pay Commission's numbers are not out. Rather than guess, the tool holds today's DA rate, so the +5 and +10 year figures are a floor: actual pay will most likely be higher.
- What is X, Y and Z city class?
- The government groups cities by population for HRA. X class is the largest cities (such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune), Y class the next tier, and Z class everywhere else. The higher transport allowance rate applies in the 19 cities notified by the Department of Expenditure in 2017: the 8 X cities, Ghaziabad (which gets Delhi's X-class HRA rate under the 7 July 2017 order) and 10 Y cities (Patna, Surat, Kochi, Kozhikode, Indore, Nagpur, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Kanpur and Lucknow). For a Y city, use the "Higher transport allowance city?" toggle in the tool; X cities get the higher rate automatically.
- Does this cover state government employees?
- No. This uses the central 7th CPC Pay Matrix and central DA, HRA and transport allowance rates. States have their own pay matrices and DA; for Rajasthan, see our Rajasthan teacher salary guide.
